Abstract
Background/Aims : There is a significant weight change in most gastric cancer patients during the perioperative period. We studied the influence of perioperative body weight changes on the prognosis of gastric cancer patients.

Methods : Eight hundred and forty-nine patients with gastric cancer underwent surgery between 1991 and 1995. Among them, 449 patient have lived for more than 5 years (survived group) and 400 died within 5 years, postoperatively (deceased group). We compared the perioperative body weight changes and prognosis of patients between the two groups.

Results : Preoperative weight loss of the survived group was less than that of the deceased group (p¡´0.001). In patients who underwent curative surgery, preoperative relative body weight of the survived group was 104.0¡¾13.8£¥ and that of the deceased group was 100.8¡¾14.3£¥ (p=0.001). After curative surgery, five-year survival rate of the patients whose preoperative relative body weight was above 90£¥ was 75.9£¥ and 5 year survival rate of the patients whose preoperative relative body weight was below 90£¥ was 64.7£¥(p=0.0118).

Conclusion : In gastric cancer patients who lose less weight preoperatively and maintain good relative body weight, the prognosis is good. Postoperative weight change has no influence on the prognosis.
